If you’re looking for an auto body shop in New Jersey make sure you give Peotters Tire & Auto a call as the New Jersey areas premier tire and brake shop. Today’s vehicles are made with many different types of fuel-saving materials like lightweight alloys and plastics. It is important for an auto body shop in New Jersey to be aware of the different materials and techniques used for repairing them.
Auto body shops like Peotter’s Tire and Auto and collision repair services refer to manuals for instructions repairing bumpers. The different material types require various finish materials, removal and installation procedures.
When a plastic bumper is cracked or has a small hole it can be repaired to look as good as new. Replacing the bumper is wasteful and it creates unnecessary debris for our landfills.
A good, eco-friendly auto body shop in New Jersey will only recommend replacing the bumper if the damage is severe enough that repair time would be considered unreasonable and quality of results would be unsatisfactory.
Wheel alignment or 'tracking' is an essential aspect of vehicle maintenance. Often done when you are having your tyres replaced, wheel alignment readjusts the angles of your car's wheels according to the manufacturer's specifications. The benefits of wheel alignment include: Reduces tyre wear and therefore increases the life of your tyres Keeps your vehicle running straight and true (rather than 'pulling' to one side) Improved handling Increased fuel efficiency Improves your driving safety A smoother ride All four of your wheels need to be aligned for your car to run correctly. If only the fronts are adjusted (sometimes known as a two-wheel alignment or 'toe and go') and your rear wheels are still out of alignment, you may still experience pulling, excessive or uneven tyre wear and a crooked steering wheel. Why not book a wheel alignment when you next buy replacement tyres? You can find great deals by searching for cheap tyres online, and even have a mobile fitting van come out to you rather than take time out of your schedule to visit a garage.Wheel alignment can seriously affect the quality of your ride, the efficiency of your handling, the precision of your steering and can lead to 'pulling' which makes your vehicle veer to one side while attempting to drive straight. All these things can become dangerous over time, so ensure that your car is maintained and in top condition for your own safety.
The cost of repairing small abrasions, cracks and holes in plastic bumpers is often much cheaper than replacing the part.
Of course, many collision repair technicians would rather replace the part and charge a fee for their labor plus mark-up on the price of the part because they lack in cosmetic repair skills and it is easier to warranty the work.
Working with Plastics
The first step to repairing plastic bumpers is to identify the material in order to choose the method of repair. Auto body shops use ISO codes on the parts to identify the various families of plastics. They cross-reference the codes with charts from the suppliers or by accessing reference materials on the internet.
It is important that the collision repair technician determine the type of plastic they are working with so they know the proper welding procedure to use to avoid damage to the part.
Some plastics can be welded with an airless welder or hot-air welder; others require a hot glue type of procedure. Tests must be performed and welding procedures have to be done correctly to avoid adhesion failure. Some bumpers will melt with a slight color change and they will remain tacky in the area where they have melted.
The bumper repair technician must identify the type of plastic they are working with in order to be successful with adhesive repairs. Failure to properly identify the plastic results in adhesion-related problems.
Some repair materials are based on flexible and rigid plastics. Using the wrong material can cause cracking when the part is flexed or it may not provide the correct strength for the repair area.
Cleaning and Prep
Proper cleaning and prep is critical for proper adhesion and finish. Whether the technician is repairing or replacing the bumper, the part will need to be cleaned. The bumper being repaired is likely to be dirty from the road; the new replacement part can have contamination on it from the manufacturing process.
Auto body repair professionals should use a low-VOC surface cleaner or a special plastics parts cleaner to help prevent solvents from going too deep into the plastic. If solvents are too harsh, they go deep into the plastic and cause adhesion problems after repairs are done.
This is an overview of the process of working with plastics. Time is money in the auto body industry; therefore, many collision repair technicians choose to replace rather than repair plastic bumpers and other parts.
Technology allows us to repair many items that are often replaced. As resources become scarce and landfills become over-full, we really should consider repairing rather than replacing when possible.

I am a student at the Surry Early College, and I am taking the Automotive and Autobody classes. I am really enjoying the Autobody classes. I get to work on my own projects. They help me out. I am getting college credit and high schoolcredit. It’s also tuition paid. I don’t have to pay anything to take it. It’s really great for me. After I graduate, I am hoping to go into ashop. I am wanting to work for somebody for a while, and then after I get experience of how to run my own business and do my own thing, thenI want to open up my own shop. Well, behind me is a 92 Ford Ranger. I had it as my first vehicle. I wrecked it. When I wrecked it, I had a plan. My plan and my vision is to put Cummings turbodiesel in it. Right now I am fitting it to a 78 F-100 chassisand suspension. It’s got a Dana 44 straight front axle underit and a 9-inch rear, so that was already done. I don’t have to do the swaps or anythinglike that. I am just going to do a little bit of bodywork, put the Cummings in it and hopefully, it’s done. The work I do is very satisfying. I love working with my hands, and I love workingwith cars and seeing how they turn out. The instructors are very helpful. When I have a question, they are right thereto answer it. If I need something, some kind of guidance, they show me and then they let me do it. One of the reasons I chose to take Autobodyhere at Surry was that I have always wanted to paint cars give those custom paint jobs. That's one of the reasons I took it. This right here is my truck that I have beenworking on restoring it. I want to give it an aftermarket paint jobsomething that would look nice. The instructors here are helpful and knowledgeableon anything they need. They know their thing so whenever you needhelp or when you are doing something they will come and help you out. You get it done the right way. This is really exciting. You are always excited when you start somethingto get it done. I grew up as a tomboy working on a farm helpingmy paw. That’s probably what got me into likingand working on cars. I love cars. I like working in Autobody because I likeworking with my hands and working on cars and helping people. I am just going around helping people likeNancy over here. I help her a lot. The other day I helped her take an exhaustoff. I helped David sand his truck a little bit,and I been working on the school’s hotrod. I painted the bottom of it. I was just going to take automotive, but nowI have decided to take Autobody because most of these dealerships are going to have Autobodyand Automotive so that’s a double whammy. When I get out of college, graduate, I’dlike to work at a dealership. I hope to get a job at a Jeep dealership becauseI love Jeeps. Autobody professionals make about $39,000per year or more based on experience. Extremely successful Autobody shop ownerscan make in the neighborhood $60,000 to $100,000 in the Piedmont Triad area. High school juniors and seniors can take Autobodyclasses tuition-free through the Career & College Promise dual enrollment program. For more information, go to www. Surry. Edu.
